The lake is central to the Shuswap. It's our water and our life. It sustains us, its our playground, its our solace, its our serenity and its our sanctuary. Not only that, but we share it with you. Lake culture is a key component of the spirit of the Shuswap. It's in the background of all of our stories... Families canoeing together and watching the magical dance of the Western Grebe. A solitary plunge in the centre of a lake from the deck of a houseboat, surrounded by nothing but scenery and silence. Sitting near the water's edge at midnight by firelight, watching the stars wheel overhead. Or enjoying a morning moment on the deck, listening as the day awakes and watching the mist roll off the lake. There a countless stories associated with our lakes, but a key element that ties them altogether is 'respect.' Our lakes are fragile, and there are many who depend on them for their well being and enjoyment. If you have the incredible opportunity to share our lakes with us, share them with respect and with the understanding that their continued enjoyment depends on how we all use them together.
How are our lakes so special? Some say it is the untouched natural beauty and the tranquil rural living that draws them to the Shuswap, to refresh and rejuvenate and connect with a larger, simpler essence. Others say that it is the exhilaration of water sport activity. But at the heart of any Shuswap Lake experience its the people who we share it with. Whether others are present or not, there's a collective understanding of shared enjoyment, evident in the respect that is shown.
